Position: Data & Analytics Platform Architect
Based: Abingdon
Type: Permanent, Full-time
Salary: £75-85k DOE + benefits

About the role:

RPS is establishing a central Data & Analytics function reporting into the Chief Data Officer. This team will be responsible for delivering reporting and analytics solutions and services to the business as well as to external clients. The team’s goal is to drive a data driven approach to decision making across RPS, ensuring all staff have access to trusted, accurate, and timely information. As well as enabling the business to monetise its data assets.

The Data & Analytics platform Architect is responsible for developing and operating a scalable, flexible, secure, cloud based (Azure) BI infrastructure. This role will be supported by a team of BI Developers and provide the business with the capability to consolidate, query, analyse and report on data derived from multiple operational systems and external data sources. The initial focus will be to take on and operate the Azure and Power BI environment built by a third party solution vendor as part of a Microsoft Dynamics ERP implementation.

Key Responsibilities
• Data solution architecture
• Translate business requirements into technical data solutions
• Develop innovative ETL approaches to bring a diverse set of on-prem and cloud-based data sources into the Data Lake
• Work alongside Enterprise Architect to define the most optimal cloud-based data architecture and infrastructure model which supports both operational and analytical data management use cases
• Provide expert technical advice and guidance to the regional Solutions Delivery Directors and the Application Development teams to help scope out and design client facing as well as internally focussed technology solutions
• Identify and implement suitable data quality management and meta data management solutions

Azure platform development and management:
• Develop and operate the Azure BI platform. Design, develop, test, and roll-out effective Azure data repositories, such as databases, data marts, blob storage, and analytics models to support the BI Developers and Reporting Specialists in delivering automated reporting, Power BI dashboards, and deploy data science capability.
• Develop Data Factory, SSIS, Logic App, and other data movement processes as required to support reporting, auditing, and other data needs in the business
• Where necessary create new formats/processes or methodologies, document and communicate them to the wider BI community as needed to enhance to organisations capabilities
• Develop and implement source control, error and exception management processes, ensuring causes of poor data quality are identified and escalated to the business owners
• Develop data archiving, purging, and GDPR compliance processes
• Ensure the BI environment is proactively monitored, data flows from source systems are robust with adequate fault tolerance, the reporting layer is consistent, and new developments are designed in a modular fashion.
• Maintain and performance tune the cloud based data storage solutions to support the operational as well as the BI application environment
• Implement the technical aspects of data governance and access control policies

Education and experience:
• Degree in computer science, information systems, or other related technical field
• A background in software and/or database development and engineering, data architecture, and/or developing BI solutions
• designing or working with conceptual and logical data models
• scripting languages (SQL, T-SQL, MDX, C#, PowerShell)
• Microsoft BI solutions (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Data Factory, PowerBI)
• Developing in BI cloud technologies – preferably Azure
• Troubleshooting and resolving database issues such as integrity, performance, replication, connectivity, recovery, and security.
• working with Master Data Management Solutions
• managing a development team
• agile methodologies
• preparing data for data science and ML
• developing data pipelines using IoT/streaming data

Knowledge/Skills
• Design and development of best practice ETL flows, data stores, dimensional models, cubes
• Data warehousing and best practice BI Architecture
• Good understanding of master data management and available options
• Data aggregation and dimensional modelling, OLAP
• Data preparation (sourcing, acquisition, integration)
• Proven ability to solve problems of varied technical backgrounds
• Fluency with appropriate tools including SQL Management Studio, Profiler, Performance Monitor and other SQL Server Management tools
• Awareness of best practice, trends, and evolutions in the IT industry and most particularly MS Azure technology stack.
• Knowledge of MS Dynamics 365 technology stack
