Principal Ornithologist

From resolving bat issues in individual homes to delivering all ecological surveys for large-scale complex commercial developments including Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP), we undertake all aspects of ecological consultancy, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and statutory requirements.

We have an exciting opportunity for a leadership role in offshore ornithology and want to hear from experienced Principal/Associate/Technical Director level ornithologists who will provide technical leadership to our in-house ornithologists and offshore project teams in the UK and globally. For very experienced individuals the appointment could be made and a more senior grade (Associate Director, Technical Director or upwards).

The role’s technical focus is ornithology services for infrastructure projects, including renewable energy, coastal developments and marine developments. Particular expertise is required in assessing offshore ornithological impacts from offshore wind projects.

Their role will be to grow, manage and support our offshore ornithological team, to orchestrate ornithology surveys, impact assessments, mitigation design, EIA and HRA’s all in accordance with best practice. You will take on responsibility for the oversight and management of more junior team members’ technical work and outputs, and work with senior staff to generate new client relationships and work streams.

• Habitats Regulations Assessment and EcIA
• Technical Oversight and sign-off of Project Outputs
• Ecological Mitigation Design and Implementation
• Staff Mentoring and Management
• Financial planning and Management

• Educated to at least degree level (MSc or equivalent, and ideally a PhD) in ecology or closely related discipline
• CIEEM membership (Full)

Essential Skills
• At least ten years’ experience working in ecological consultancy or SNH, JNCC, NE, NRW, RSPB, BTO
• Ability to plan and undertake the full range of surveys (notably birds) and also surveys
• Full knowledge of UK and EU Wildlife Legislation and best practice survey techniques
• Significant on-site EIA and HRA experience on infrastructure projects
• Experience in work-winning for major projects
• Developed skills in large scale schemes including EIAs
• Full driving licence

Desirable Skills
• Numerate with experience in modelling and statistics relevant to understanding bird distribution, collision risk and impacts, using GIS, population modelling and programming (r, python or alternative).
