Ornithologist or Assistant Ornithologist

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and ambitious ornithologist or assistant ornithologist to work on a wide variety of high-profile offshore projects globally. The role’s technical focus is ornithology services for infrastructure projects, including renewable energy, coastal developments, road, airport and marine developments. Particular expertise is required in modelling and statistics relevant to understanding bird distribution, collision risk and impacts offshore, using GIS, population modelling and programming (r, python or alternative).

• Effectively managing project tasks;
• Day to day coordination of a wide and varied workload and supervising field staff and survey effort;
• Undertaking site surveys;
• GIS, population modelling and programming;
• Inputs to Ornithological Impact Assessment;
• Inputs to Habitats Regulations Assessment and EcIA;
• Inputs to Ecological Mitigation Design and Implementation;
• Task planning and Management;

• A degree (MSc or equivalent, and ideally a PhD) in ecology or closely related discipline;
• CIEEM membership (Graduate/Associate);
Essential Skills:
• Capable of advance GIS and spatial modelling, and programming ability.
• At least two years’ experience working in ecological consultancy;
• Ability to plan and undertake the full range of surveys (notably birds) and also other habitat surveys to a high standard and to identify indicator plant species and habitat types;
• Knowledge of UK and EU Wildlife Legislation and best practice survey techniques;
• EIA and HRA experience on infrastructure projects;
• Developed skills in large scale schemes including EIAs;
• Full driving licence;
