Trainee Developer

RPS is the leading provider of professional and field-based support services to the water industry, working with a wide variety of water companies across the UK and overseas.

We are currently seeking candidates that are keen on kick-starting an exciting and rewarding career in software development. The successful candidate will embody a friendly, motivated and professional attitude and will join a specialised team responsible for delivering industry leading software services, data management and manipulation solutions.

This role is ideally suited to school/college leavers with a passion for computing or programming. While no professional experience is required, a portfolio of demonstrable hobbyist experience is preferable and will be highly advantageous.

The successful candidate will be given opportunities to be exposed to all elements of the project lifecycle. With excellent in-house training and support opportunities, you will be able to learn on the job and establish a foundation that will enable you to contribute, assist and eventually take ownership of development projects.

In your day-to-day role you would have opportunity to:
• Learn about and contribute to the creation of in-house software, tools and data management solutions that are built for purposes such as flood prediction, management and response.
• Support and enhance existing software solutions to expand functionality and improve efficiency.
• Work closely with other members of the team to support their work where needed.
• Liaise with clients and colleagues to understand, propose and deliver solutions to meet their needs.
• Learn about and work with application programming languages such as Excel VBA and MapBasic.

In addition, as your skills develop, you will have potential to:
• Pursue career progression opportunities within the business, and its wider group RPS.
• Plan, manage and lead your own projects with minimal supervision.
• Branch out into challenging development projects using general purpose programming languages such as C# and the .NET Framework.

The ideal candidate will have:
• GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective organisational, communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and to project deadlines.

Additional skills that are extremely beneficial to this role:
• Computing related qualifications highly beneficial.
• A portfolio of hobbyist experience demonstrating your passion for computing and development will be highly advantageous.
• Science and/or Geography related subject qualifications.
• Full UK driving licence.

• Full time position (40 hours per week).
• Office based at a premises in Derby.
